Pugilism is the core unarmed material taught at Salle Saint-George. It is a combination of boxing and wrestling that was popular in Britain and the United States in the 18th and 19th centuries.  Often referred to in those days as “Fencing with the Fists,” the art utilizes similar methods, terminology, strategy and even techniques as do the weapon arts of the Classical era.

Unlike common misconceptions about this form of bare-knuckle boxing, pugilism is graceful, poised, scientific, and artful.  Skill and an understanding of the art are prized above brute strength and rash actions, elevating the material from brash combat sport to highly developed martial art.
